Know the warning signs that you might be dealing with a thyroid problem.

With January being thyroid disease awareness month this is the perfect time to talk about your thyroid. The thyroid gland is located within the neck and is responsible for controlling everything from metabolism and heart rate to body temperature and hormone levels. Unfortunately, millions of Americans deal with thyroid problems. If you are experiencing symptoms of a thyroid disorder our endocrinologists at Endo 247can help.

Unfortunately, many people have thyroid problems but don’t even realize they have an issue. That’s because symptoms are often mild at first and certain symptoms can be attributed to other health problems. Diseases of the thyroid gland can cause the gland to become overactive or underactive.

An overactive thyroid is when the thyroid produces too much hormone. This is known as hyperthyroidism. When the gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone this results in hypothyroidism. Symptoms of hypothyroidism include,

  • Fatigue
  • Joint pain
  • Cold intolerance
  • Dry skin
  • Hair loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Unexpected weight gain
  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Constipation
  • Mental fog
  • Memory loss
  • Depression

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism include,

  • Irritability
  • Poor concentration
  • Heat intolerance
  • Racing heart
  • Nervousness
  • Frequent bowel movements
  • Brittle hair
  • Sweating
  • Increase appetite
  • Unexpected weight loss

Cysts and benign nodules can also develop on the thyroid gland, but most nodules do not cause any symptoms; however, some can produce similar symptoms to hyperthyroidism. Large nodules on the other hand can cause some difficulties with swallowing or breathing.  While most nodules are benign, a small percentage may be cancerous. This can be diagnosed with a simple fine needle biopsy.

If you are experiencing any of these symptoms then it’s time to turn to our endocrinologists for a proper evaluation. These symptoms don’t necessarily mean that you have a thyroid disorder, as there are many other conditions that can also present with these same symptoms.

While thyroid disorders are not curable they are easily managed through long-term medication and lifestyle changes. Our medical team can work with you to create a treatment plan based on your current health status and your needs.

If you are experiencing symptoms of a thyroid disorder it’s important that you get the proper diagnostic care and treatment. Turn to the experts at Endo247 for help. Contact us today to schedule an appointment. Our endocrinologists are available to assist you 24 hours a day.
